“Cassie found both recovery and yoga nearly fifteen years ago while seeking to repair all parts of her life from the wreckage and devastation of addiction. In time, yoga helped her overcome the physical and mental trauma caused by substance use disorder, and she considers it the cornerstone of her recovery to this day. Cassie tried different styles of yoga over the years, often pausing her practice on account of life getting busy, only to find herself coming back again and again, seeking mind-body harmony and to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

When Cassie first tried Ashtanga yoga three years ago, she knew right away that it was a deeply transformative practice if done with consistency, commitment, and self-discipline—just like long-term recovery. As her Ashtanga practice deepened and progressed, so did her observations of how it strengthened her recovery and improved her life on a day-to-day basis. She saw this in everything from focus at work to self-confidence to her relationships with others. Cassie was drawn to the Trini Foundation because it promotes a message that she feels she lives powerfully every day, and she wants to share it with those who are struggling and looking for a lifeline.

It is often said in her Ashtanga community, ‘Ashtangis can do anything!’, and after practice every morning Cassie feels ready to take on the world in her highly demanding career. Learning about the tragic increase in overdose deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cassie is more committed to sharing with others about how Ashtanga yoga has helped her stay sober even during extremely tumultuous times when relapse seemed imminent. She credits her compassionate and supportive Ashtanga community and teacher for helping her stay self-motivated, focused, and disciplined in her practice and life during the pandemic. Cassie hopes that your contribution to the Trini Foundation will lead to someone who is struggling with substance use disorder to discover the transformative and empowering practice of Ashtanga yoga, a kind and supportive community, and healthy long-term recovery.”
